Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two players who have been ruling football for a decade. They both have won the most prestigious awards more times than anyone else. Not only the awards they are also rulings the hearts of the people across the globe.

Both Cristiano and Messi have won the biggest individual football award FIFA BALLON d’Or the most times than anyone else has in his career. Messi has won six in his career whereas Ronaldo has won five. Out of the last twelve awards, they have won this eleven times in total. The only player who won the trophy out the last twelve was the Croatian midfielder Luka Modric due to his performances in the World cup and also his contribution to Real Madrid’s champion league victory.

Though, that award was very controversial as most of the people wanted it to be given to Ronaldo. Obviously, Ronaldo was the top scorer for Real in that campaign and had a massive contribution in their 13th Champions League title victory. He had an amazing World cup too where he scored 4 goals and also had a hattrick against a strong Spanish side.

Lionel Messi won the last one due as his performances last season were out of this World. His team couldn’t manage to win the champions league but still, he was undoubtedly the best last season. He scored 50+ goals in total and also was the top scorer in the golden boot race with 36 goals in La Liga Santander. This season he is not at his best and neither is his arch-rival but still, they look so much at the top in the Ballon d’Or race.

First let’s look into his record of winning this title. He has won this title a total of five times. The first time he won he was at Manchester United and it was due to his heroics in the 2007/08 season in both the Premier League and the champions league. Manchester United won both the titles and he was the top scorer for United in both the competitions. Then after a year, he moved to Real where he has won a record four best player awards.

 He won his second one in 2013 after an amazing 2012/13 season with Real Madrid scoring 55 goals for them in as many games. He was very emotional at the ceremony.

His Second at Real came in his fifth season when he helped them win their 10th champions league title in their history. He also scored a record number of goals in the single champions league season and that number is 17. No one has surpassed this number so far.

The next award that he won was in 2016, again he helped Real to win the champions league title for the 11th time in their history.

Next year again he won the award as he achieved the same milestone he achieved in the previous. He was one of the main reasons why Madrid won their 13th UCL title and third in a row but wasn’t awarded the award because he left Real Madrid soon after they won the champions league final.

This the year he is again in the mix of things. Last time when Messi was the winner of the award he was the runner’s up. His record this season is not bad but is not according to the standards that he has set at Rea Madrid. Last year he was pretty much below average but still was a runner up as there were no major performances by any other player in Europe.

He has scored a total of 27 goals this season with 25 coming in the league only. Due to his incredible performances, Juventus are on the top of the Serie A table. The other came in the champions league for him. He became the only player for Juve on Saturday with his free-kick goal against Torino to score 25 or more than 25 goals in a single Seri A season since 1962.

He is just eight goals away from making history for Juventus. Felice Borel currently holds the record of scoring the most goals for Juventus in a single Serie A season who currently stands at 32 goals. Cristiano is very much likely to break this record. He is also on his way to breaking another huge record for Juventus and that is of scoring most goals in a single season in all competitions. Ferenc Hirzer has scored 35 goals for Juventus in one season and that is a record for them whereas Cristiano has scored 27 goals in the season so far and with the number of games remaining in the league and then some possible champions league games for the old lady Cristiano is comfortably on his way to breaking that record is well. 

 He has scored in the last four games he has played for his club. If he can manage to score the goals like the way he is doing right now he will surely be able to help his team the league title and their most awaited title Champions League.

Messi has won six Ballon d'Or awards in his illustrious career. He won his first one when he was just 22 years old after he helped Barca to win La Liga and the champions league. He won four consecutive Ballon d'Or at that time from 2009 to 2012. In that period, he helped Barcelona to win three league titles and two champions league titles.

At that point in time, it was considered that Cristiano will never be able to cope up with his standard and will never be able to achieve what he has achieved. But then Cristiano came back and leveled the number of Ballon d'Or. Messi won his fifth one in 2015 again after helping Barca win their 5th champions league and his third one.

Ranking All the Ballon d'Or Winners From the Last 25 Years

Messi won the last year is well taking his record one past the great Ronaldo. He scored 36 goals in the league season last year and won the Uefa golden boot trophy is well. He managed to net the ball 51 times in all competitions last season.

This season he has not been up to his standards. He has scored 30+ goals in the league in most of the seasons he has played for Barca, but this time around his goal tally in the league is just 22 goals with five games remaining in the league for Barca. He has only managed to score 27 goals in total compared to his 51 last season.

Also, his team is 7 points behind Real Madrid in the title race with one game in hand but they don't look like chasing Real with just 5 games remaining. Their form in the last few games is also a huge problem for them as they have lost 6 points in last four games. It seems that they are already out of the league with 5 games remaining and also if we look at Real Madrid's performances it doesn't look like that they will lose any points.

Messi has only scored two goals in the champions league so far. Also, his team has a round of 16 matches against Napoli in the second where in the first leg they have a 0-0 draw.

If Messi want to win his 7th Ballon d'Or then he will need to help his team win both the trophies or just Champions league as the performances in it are most considered while selecting a winner.

At this stage, if we see then clearly Ronaldo is at a better position to win the Ballon d'Or. Ronaldo has given more valuable performances then Messi. And they are in a better position to win the league title and also the champions league. It is yet to be seen who will win it?
